Lola J. Scheffler, a devoted mother and wife, passed on July 30, 2010 at the Groton Nursing Facility after a short illness.

A lifelong resident of the area, she helped on the family dairy farm in West Groton and worked several years at the Groton Smith Corona Plant. After selling the dairy farm, Lola and her husband, Clarence, retired to the warmer climates of Georgia and Florida. After Clarence passed away she returned to New York to live near her children.

Mable Teeter, formerly of Lansing, NY, passed away last Saturday at the Groton Nursing Facility surrounded by her loving family.

A lifelong resident of the Lansing area, Mable worked at Smith Corona in Groton for many years. She was belonged to the Lansing United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Ithaca Moose Club. An avid crafter she made numerous dolls and stuffed animals over the years and she listed reading, puzzles and watching her favorite soap operas as some of her favorite pastimes.

General Information:

John Henry Evener, Sr. passed away this past Tuesday. He was one of fourteen children and graduated from Union-Endicott High School. He entered the US Army and served in the Pacific during WW II.

When John returned from his military service, he met Sarah Ruth Canfield and they were married on June 28th, 1946. (The Evener’s celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this past June.)

John was employed by Gutchess Lumber Company for 40 years and was a life member of Dryden Post #8158 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Along with being an avid NY Yankees fan, he enjoyed Louis Lamour and Zane Gray novels. John was a devoted husband and father who loved his family deeply.

General Information:

Edward G. Smith, “Donkey Man”, the last leaf on the branch of the family tree who was a loving father, husband, grand-dad and friend passed from this Earth Sunday, July 11, 2010.

A lifelong resident of the Dryden area, he retired from the village of Dryden in 1986 after 16 years of service. He had been the owner of Ed’s Garage in Dryden. He was a volunteer for the Dryden Fire Dept as well as a charter member of the Harford Fire Dept. He and his wife enjoyed making the rounds of square dancing in the area and Ed was fondly known as the “Donkey Man” for his hobby of having donkeys. His family loved him dearly and will miss him greatly.

General Information:

Gurd served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon completion of his tour, he returned to the Cortland, Groton area where he became employed with the Smith Corona Corporation as a tool and die maker in Groton, retiring from the Cortland plant in 1989 after 42 years of service.

He was a man who believed in being involved in his community and while in Groton, he was a 60 year member of the Carrington-Fuller Post 800 American Legion, a life member of VFW Post 7127 in Moravia. He served as a board member at Stonehedges Golf Course and was a member of the Groton Corona Club, was a lifetime member of the Groton Rod and Gun Club, served on the Groton Village Board of Trustees as well as a Police Commissioner. He was a member of the Conger Fire Company of the Groton Fire Department and served on the Board of Wardens.

He lived every day to the fullest and enjoyed his hobbies of fishing and hunting with his friends, bowling and golfing, but his favorite pastime was to spend time with family and friends.
